My Use Case
I track my calories to manage my weight gain or weight loss cycles as part of my fitness routine.
I usually just use my “laser eyes” to estimate the calories and protein content of meal.
I'm quite accurate. Dietician vetted*.
Yes, I'm a certified calorie counter.
But I often forget to actually document and calculate my daily or weekly intake.** This is when I use counting apps.
Apps I've Tried and My Recommendation
Tried LoseIt! and MyFitnessPal before. Meh.
Tried them, paid for subscriptions, used them for years, not impressed.
Tried MacroFactor (link) recently (I have a paid subscription, not affiliated). IMPRESSED.
It's amazing.
Its AI feature auto-recognises foods to the point that I verbally exclaim out loud every time at how amazed I am with its accuracy (in terms of recognising what the food is and portion size).
It makes very reasonable estimates that I would generally vet positively myself.
You can get an extended free trial by carefully going through the setup. There’s a toggle asking if you’d like an extended trial.
LoseIt! does have a larger food database, but I still have to manually enter most of my entries. That takes a few minutes. MacroFactor lets me do the same in seconds. It's insane.
If you're looking for a calorie or nutrition counting app, MacroFactor has my vote of confidence.
*…My laser eyes are apparently impressively accurate according to some of the dietician colleagues I've spoken to.
